The Approach in Female Rhinoplasty

Which Conditions Are Assessed?

Topics frequently discussed with female patients may include the following:

• Softening the hump or prominence on the nasal dorsum
• The shape, height and droop of the nasal tip
• Balancing the angle between the nose and the lip
• The appearance of the nostrils
• Internal structural problems that make breathing difficult (for example, a deviated septum)

Which of these come to the fore and how they will be addressed varies from person to person. What matters is assessing the nose as a whole together with the face, rather than a single area.

The Open and Closed Approaches

There are two basic approaches in rhinoplasty. With the closed approach, all incisions stay inside the nose. With the open approach, a small incision is made on the columella so that the structures can be corrected under wider visibility. Which approach is suitable is determined by the structure of your nose and the changes that are planned. When work on the bone is required, options such as the piezo (ultrasonic) method, which shapes tissue in a more preserving way, may also be considered.

The Recovery Process

A protective splint is usually in place over the nose during the first week after surgery. Swelling and bruising around the eyes are common in this period and subside over time. The time it takes to return to social life varies from person to person. The swelling of the nose resolving completely and the nose taking on its final shape is spread over a longer period. Following the recommendations given during this process is important for the result to settle in a healthy way.
